Being a driving instructor can be an extremely rewarding and flexible career.
Download our free honesty pack to decide if it’s the right career for you, and learn about the options available during the training process.
The basics…
Driving Instructors are regulated by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency. To become an Approved Driving Instructor, you need to pass three exams:
- Theory and Hazard Perception
- Driving ability
- Instructional ability
It is theoretically possible to qualify as a DVSA Approved Driving Instructor for less than £300 by just taking these three exams; but what is the likelihood of success doing it this way, without any training? You are far more likely to qualify by following a structured training course.
Sounds expensive?
Read on to see how our training can be as cheap or expensive as you need, and learn how you can subsidise or even offset the training costs completely by entering the trainee scheme.
No massive upfront fees
Unlike many other large driving schools, which charge £000’s upfront, we offer training on a Pay As You Go basis, with no massive upfront fees payable to us. We encourage you to study in a self-directed way, using our own training materials but are here to offer you support and guidance when you need it. During the early stages of your training, you can choose from several levels of support, to suit your own ability and learning style:
- Purchase affordable self-directed workbooks from just £9.99 each and guide yourself through the process,
- Choose a more supported option with your work being marked by a trainer and telephone or video-call support
- A fully-supported option with face-to-face training is always available.
- Mix and match the above options to suit as you prepare for the first of three qualifying exams.

As you reach the more advanced stages, in-car training is highly encouraged to ensure your own driving is of a high standard before you take the second qualifying exam. This recommended, but still entirely optional, training is linked to our series of workbooks, giving you a strong link between theory and practice as you prepare for the second of the qualifying exams.
Subsidise your training costs with a trainee license
As you progress through your training, and on successful completion of the second exam, consider joining us as a licensed trainee. This option allows you to gain real-world experience as you deliver driving lessons to paying customers: a great way to subsidise your training costs. If you follow this route, some of the compulsory training hours could have been achieved already if you chose the tutor-supported and in-car training options or parts 1 and 2.
If you chose the more self-directed options then don’t worry: the trainee licence is not compulsory. You could still continue with the self-directed learning and choose support when you are ready, and count those hours towards the trainee licence if you change your mind.

Honesty Pack

We don’t have a sales brochure. We don’t even call it an information pack. We call it an honesty pack.
We want to offer you the choice of being fully responsible for your learning or taking a fully-guided path. Or something in between. Or nothing! If you decide that the reality of training to be a driving instructor isn’t for you then we’re glad you came here before potentially being ripped off by a larger driving school!
That’s also a good reason for reading our honesty pack!
